Alternate History: Uspo

  • 1700 An American expedition to Roanoke reveals a startling secret: a gateway to what seems to be a whole other world, with good lumber, great farm land and gold. The explorers decide to keep the news to themselves
  • On the other side of the world, a new Emperor takes the throne in Japan. This man, who was never born in our world, begins a radical departure from the previous policy of isolationism
  • 1776 A very different war for independence is fought by the American colonies. Knowing it's (apparently) hopeless to fight the British Empire, Washington and his men fight a long rearguard action to allow everyone to escape through the Roanoke Gateway, before following themselves and destroying it behind them. Americans have once again struck out into a brave new world
  • 1812 Not everyone wanted to leave their homes of course. British America continues to grow, right until the Crown institutes abolition. The southern colonies start a second revolutionary war, and with Napoleon looming as a larger threat, successfully secede.
  • The Iroquois Confederacy successfully earns independence from Britain in exchange for opposing the South. The lands around the Great Lakes become a haven for all tribes and, eventually, all peoples
  • 1846 Not quite a brand new world, the Americans have settled in California. This inevitably leads to war, which the Americans win, claiming territory as far as Baja California.
  • Once again turning west (Knowing the British wait to the east), the U.S begin colonizing islands and trading with Japan instead of Europe
  • Without a hungry young empire to deal with, the American Indian retain their independence, despite constant attempts from Europeans to claim their lands. However, it is an equally bloody century for them as tribes battle other tribes. When the dust settles, the Apache stand unopposed in the south, the Blackfoot in the north and the mighty Sioux nation in-between
  • 1861 Civil war breaks out in the Confederacy as the long-subjugated black slaves organize and revolt. The slave owners have infrastructure on their side, but are simply outnumbered. One long and bloody war later, the CSA has been pushed back to Texas and "Freedomland" declares independence.
  • Both countries are plagued by corruption, segregation and a perpetual state of cold war with one another
  • 1898 The United States of America has officially become the "United States of the Pacific Ocean", with territory from Alaska to Hawaii.
  • After a shared war with Europe's own colonies in the Pacific, the Uspo and Japan broker an alliance that neither side is entirely comfortable with, but will be solidified in a few decades when Hirohito is elected president
  • 1914 The Great War: The Confederacy and Freedomland go at it again, with no clear winner. Britain and Uspo, who have never exactly become friends, even after regaining contact, once again battle, after Uspo supports Australia's bid for independence
  • The Indian Nations manage to stay out of it all, spending their time finally trying to industrialize so they can join the next big war
  • Australia joins the Uspo, bringing their state number up to 50
  • The Mormon movement decides to declare independence themselves, claiming territory next to Uspo for the great nation of "Deseret". Everyone lets them, because... it's Utah
